Northern Baja California, Mexico
other animal (spider?) had collected
them. Two Uta meernsi also were
collected from beneath granite flakes.
That night the zipper on my sleeping
bag broke, so I slept in the front
seat of the Trawlall. Drove 100 mi. today.
June 3
This morning was quite warm,
so we really looked for Sceloporus
orcutti in cement from 0800 to 0930.
During that time the air temp. (30°)
ranged from 21.0 to 23.5°C. We saw
6 animals but were unable to capture
any. I have never seen such
spooky animals. They would disappear
over a rock while we were still
over a hundred feet away. In the
Rivside area they move from crevice
to crevice in the same rock pile
until they get in one that is too
deep for us to work, or until we
capture the animal. At this site,
however, they would run over 2 or 3
rock piles until we completely lost
them from view. I've never tried to
capture more exasperating lizards in
my life. As we drove the 12 miles
back to Remorosa after 0930, we saw
7 adult + 2 juvenil S. orcutti. We were
able to capture 1 adult or, but this took
us a considerable period of time.
