Palm Springs area, Riverside Co., Calif.
We left "Granddaddy Dune" at 1530
and drove slowly down Varner Road
toward Garnet. By this time Ima
were beginning to be seen on the
sand in the lee of bushes, so we
cought several small ones & 1 large or
along the road. We reached UCR at
1725 after a 124 mile trip today.
Some of the smallest Diposaurus I
have seen were captured today (3 of them
3 mi. N.W. of 1000 Palms), I don't know
why they are still so small. The entire
area covered today is extremely dry.
Most of the perennials are in wilt.
Some of the animals caught were quite
thin, but others caught at the same
location were nice & fat. We didn't see
any adult ? Ima for a long time
today. If we hadn't dug some of them
out of the sand at the big dune, we'd
have seen only one (which we caught). Adult
animals caught today:
Ima inornata - 14 (9?, 5?)
Diposaurus dorsalis - 14
Crotaphytus wislizeni - 1 (?)
Callisaurus draconoides - 1 (?)
Cnemidophorus tigris - 1 (?)
Urosaurus graciosa - 1 (?)
Total - 32
Young caught:
Ima - 15
Diposaurus - 8
Total - 23
56 animals were
caught today.
(Diposaurus was
given away.)
