May 13
Glamis area, Imperial Co., Calif.
Walt Moberly, Bob Lasiewski, & I
left UCR at 1045 for the dunes.
We ran out of gas between Cabezon
& Whitewater because no one had
filled the vehicle at the garage.
This slowed us down about one
hour. Nevertheless, we reached the
Highline Canal at 1505 and began
looking for lizards. We found 4
dead Phynosoma m'calli & 2 live
ones as we drove between the
canals (one pass). Then we collected
Uma notata & Urosaurus graciosa
in the dunes until nearly sundown.
After eating supper in Glamis, we
began night collecting at 1945.
We drove over to the Highline Canal,
back to Glamis, then to the top
of the big dune (36 miles). We
collected 9 Coleonyx variegatus
in that distance. However, later, 3
San Diego State students told us they
collected 8 from 2230 to 2330 in about
1/2 the distance on the canal road.
We quit night collecting at 2215.
Animals caught today:
Uma notata - 24 Phynosoma m'calli - 2
Crotaphytus wislizeni - 1 Calisaurus drac. - 2
Coleonyx variegatus - 9
Urosaurus graciosa - 8 Total - 46
