UCR campus, Riverside Co., Calif.
This afternoon Walt Moberly & I looked
for lizards on campus. We began at
1330. At that time the weather conditions
were: air temp.(30")-23.8°C. (1cm)-27.0°C. soil
surface temp.-43.6°C, rock surface temp. - 42.8°C,
0-3 mph wind from N.E., 50% overcast (thin).
We looked for Sceloporus orcutti
from 1330 to 1430. Only 4 animals of
this species were seen (1 ad. ♀, 3 juveniles),
3 of which were captured (ad♀ & 2 juveniles).
at 1430 we left the rocky area &
started looking for Crepidophorus
hyperythus several hundred yards east
of Welber Hall. Only one animal of this
species was seen (about 1500), and it
eluded capture. However, 7 Uta
stansburiana (5 ♂, 2 ♀) and 1 Sceloporus
occidentalis were captured before we quit
looking at 1530. One Eumeces
skiltonianus was seen while we were
looking for Sceloporus orcutti. At
1530 the weather conditions were:
air temp.(30")-22.2°C. (1cm)-24.5°C.soil temp.-33.0°C.
wind 5-8 mph from NE, 75% overcast (thin).
We looked in locations where numerous
S. orcutti & C. hyperythus were seen earlier
this year, so I feel quite certain they
simply weren't active at this time of
day today. Numerous Uta stansburiana were
seen, but relatively few
Sceloporus occidentalis.
