Maynew 1961 Journal 3. Feb. 2 Glamis area, Imperial Co., Calif. over on the road between the canals. In its squashed condition it measured 42 mm. S-V length. It had just been killed today, so at least some of them are active now. We quit night-collecting at 2000 and went to bed at 2330. We drove 185 miles today. The minimum temp. tonight was 56° F. Feb. 3 We arose at 0730 and ate breakfast. Then we checked the traps by the Coachella Canal. These beetles were placed in B17. Only 9 beetles were in this can (5 Eleodes, 4 one other species). a dead adult Citellus tetricaudus was also in the can. We collected on the road from 0920 to 1020. A young Phrynosoma m'calli was caught, but that was the only lizard seen. During this time the air temp. (30°) ranged from 19.0° to 20.6°C. One of the two traps at our collecting site had been pulled out of the ground and the beetles were scattered all around. We replaced the can where it belonged. The other can contained enough beetles to completely fill bottles 20, 23, 52, 58, and 59. These traps are in the dunes, less than 2 miles from the trap near the canal in the lush creosote bush scrub, but contained a much larger number of beetles. Several dozen dead beetles were still on the ground around the trap that was pulled out, so presumably it would have contained as many beetles if left undisturbed.
