Mayhew 1960 Sept. 16 Journal Palm Springs, Riverside Co., Calif. Walt Moberly & I left UCR at 0500 to get our monthly sample at this collecting site. We checked the trap at Windy Point, but only a few beetles were in it. Sunrise occurred at 0535. We reached Vista Chino at 0600. It was still quite cool, so we didn't begin to look for animals until 0645. We looked until 1215. The first Uma (a hatchling) was seen at 0705; at that time, weather conditions were: air temp. (30") - 26.4°C. " " (1cm) - 27.6°C. soil temp. - 29.0°C. clear with no wind Two hatchling Phrynosoma m'calli were picked up on the sand some distance apart (one at 0720, the other at 0810). Some animals still were active when we quit. At this time, weather conditions were: air temp. (30") - 36.oo°C. " " (1cm) - 41.5°C. soil temp. - 64.0°C. animals caught today were: Uma inornata - 26 (3 hatchlings) Diposaurus dorsalis - 8 Phrynosoma m'calli - 2 (both hatchlings) Total - 36 We returned to UCR at 1410 after driving 105 miles today.
