July 16 - Yuma Sand Hills, Imperial Co.,
Calif.
After leaving 29 Palms we drove thru Joshua Tree Natl. Mon. and down the north side of the Salton Sea, reaching Glennis area at 1620. The air temperature at this time was 45.5°C. No lizards were seen until 1830 (air temp. 42°C) when a ♀ adult Uma notata was captured beside the road. Several small Umass were caught out in the dunes but no large adults were seen. Sunset was at 1845. We then ate dinner & started night collecting. At 1930 a very small coleonyx was found on the pavement. (Air temp 38.5°C, Road surface temp: 43.6°C). At 1945 an adult ♀ coleonyx was taken but, aside from 2 sidewinders, no more reptiles were collected that evening. Three complete runs between the canals were made, all animals being seen on the first of these. We made camp at 2230 in the old gravel pit 8 mi W. of Glennis. Minimum
