Townsend Solitaire Western Bluebird White-breasted Nuthatch Pinyon Nuthatch Violet-green Swallow Cliff Swallow Green-tailed Towhee Fox Sparrow Olive-sided Flycatcher Steller's Jay Mountain Chickadee As we left the area, we captured 19 Sceloporus graciosa & 1 Sceloporus occidentalis. Mojave Desert, San Bernardino Co., Calif. We spent a little time at the Mojave River, 3 miles north of Cedar Springs. The river was dry, but a few isolated pools were still present. It was nearly noon, so few animals were active (air temp. -100°F.). Those seen here were: Sceloporus occidentalis Masticophis lateralis Band-tailed Pigeons Ash-throated Flycatcher Hyla regilla We captured 2 Sceloporus magister & 2 Xantusia vigilis as we passed through Hesperia (1 Xantusia was released). We stopped at 15 mile point to demonstrate to the class that no reptiles would be active at that time of the day. After resting for a while in Lucerne Valley, we drove slowly to Stoddard Valley, looking for reptiles on the way.
