Mayhew 1959 Journal 44. Apr.29 5 mi.N.W. of 1080 Palms, Riverside Co., Calif. The highest temp.[air (30°)] recorded by us for the day was at 1415, when the thermometer read 41.5°C. (107°F.). At this time we saw an adult Callisaurus dreconides sitting on the road pavement in the sun (in Rancho Mirage). We returned to UCR at 1645, after a trip of 144 miles. Apr.30 Frank Aubrey & I returned to station III to complete our sample today. We left UCR at 0535, and arrived at the collecting station at 0630. The sky was overcast when we left Riverside, so we expected to find the wind blowing in the desert. We were not disappointed on this count. The wind was blowing 25-30 mph. with gusts up to 40 mph. Consequently, few animals were to be seen. However, in spite of the weather, we were able to capture 12 reptiles: Diposaurus dorsalis - 1 Uta stansburiana - 1 ♂ Phrynosoma platyrhinos - 1 ♂ Uma insculpta - 3 ad. ♂, 3 ad. ♀, 2 im.♂, 1 im.♀. Most of the Uma had to be stirred out of the sand, even though the soil temperatures were reasonably high. Apparently they didn't like the effects of wind any better than we did. Sand crickets
