By 0927, then began to look for animals. When the first adult animal
we saw in the dunes was a Diposaurus
dorsalis, I realized we had arrived too
late to get an adequate sample of
Uma inornata, the species we were
primarily interested in acquiring.
Nevertheless, we were able to capture a
total of 18 animals before we quit (at
1215) - 9 Diposaurus (3 adult σ?, 2
adult ♀, 3 immatures [sex?], and 1 very
small juvenile); 9 Uma (4 adult σ?, 3
adult ♀, 1 immature σ?, + 1 immature ♀).
By 1130 (air temp. [1cm] - 41.0°C., soil surface
temp. -56.0°C.), the only Uma we could
find were those we disturbed from
the sand near the bases of creoste
bushes on the lee side (in relation
to sun) of each bushes. Rarely were we
able to catch one of these, however,
since they would usually run rapidly
to the next bush + disappear under
the sand before we could see where it
went. At this same time (1130), the
Diposaurus were either underground or
sitting up in creoste bushes (1 case
seen). When we stopped looking at
1215, various temps. were:
air temp. (30") - 39.5°C.
" " (1cm) - 42.5°C.
soil surface temp. - 59.5°C.
