April 19 Deep Canyon D.P.S., Riverside Co., Calif.
9 mammals of 3 general Dipodomys sp. (3)
Peromyscus (2) sp., and Perognathus sp.(4).
after breakfast we hiked east of the
gate to the mouth of a small
canyon that looked very shallow from
a distance. However, it turned out
to be a long canyon, most of
which was hidden from our
campsite. It apparently goes all the
way to the valley in which La
Quinta is located. We saw Callisamus
chaconides, Uta stansburiana and
Cnemidophorus tigris in this area, and
caught one Crotaphytus collaris. A
Dipsosaurus dorsalis was later
seen on the alluvial fan below
the canyon mouth. Also seen in
the canyon were: Verding Tolmie warbler,
as well as House finch and Black-
throated sparrow. We proceeded south
from that canyon and entered another
just north of Coyote Canyon. In
this site we saw Black-throated grey
warblers and a shrike. We also caught
2 Sauromalus obesus and toe-clipped
them, then released them. One Lepus
californicus was seen on our way
back to the cars, which we packed
at 1245 (left camp at 0820 that morning).
