April 18
Deep Canyon D.R.S., Riverside Co., Calif.
These two animals seemed to be as curious about us as we were about them. We hiked in as far as the first major waterfall (~100 ft high). There were several pools of water between the dead cottonwoods and the waterfall – a couple of which were at least 5 feet deep. We left the canyon at 1720 and returned to the cars. We set up camp just north of our gate + fixed chow. Then we drove down to the floor of the Coachella Valley to night collect. However, the worst sand storm of the year was raging so nothing was seen or collected.
However, Lesser Nighthawks were seen feeding around the lights in Palm Desert, and a 3/4 grown Cario latrans was seen beside the road about 200 yards north of Mr. Philip Boyd's Deep Canyon Ranch. Although sand filled the air on the floor of the valley, only gentle breezes were blowing in Palm Desert + at our campsite.
We went to bed about 2230.
April 19
This morning we arose at 0700 and checked the mammal traps we had set the night before. Sixteen traps had been set, and we caught
