Mayhem 1959 Journal 36. April 18 Deep Canyon Desert Research Station, Riverside C., Calif. various habitats. Along this portion of the trip we saw the following species: Steller's joy Western bluebird Scrub joy Prairie falcon Vaux swift Lark sparrow Cilllus beckeyi Citillus leucurus at 1230 we started to walk into Deep Canyon. In the canyon itself we saw: Gambel quail Uta messasi Mourning dove Black-throated sparrow Yellow warbler Black-headed grosbeak Hummingbird (?) House finch Blue-gray gnatcatcher Phainopepla White-throated swift Black phoebe Ash-throated flycatcher Hyla arenicolor Ovis canadensis a total of 16 bighorn were seen by the group. 3 ewes and 2 lambs were seen on the western edge of Deep Canyon. One ram, 3 ewes, 3 yearlings x 2 lambs were seen on the canyon floor near the 2 dead cottonwoods about 1/4 mile from the canyon mouth. (This was the first waterhole we found that contained water.) Another ewe and a yearling were seen on the rocks about 150 feet above our heads. We were able to watch them for about 5 minutes before they disappeared around a rock outcrop.
