April 14 Mojave Desert, San Bernardino Co., Calif.
collecting site a mile west of Phelan.
We walked this spot at 1130. We drove
north on Beekley Road looking for lizards.
We found several Sceloporus occidentalis
and 1 Sceloporus magister. However, we
expected to see more S. magister than
this, so we drove west on Phelan Road
to Highway 138, then west until we
were 4 miles west of the Los Angeles
Co. line (5 miles west of Desert Springs)
and 6 miles East of Llano, L.A. County.
The Joshua tree stand was larger and
denser than the original site a few
miles east. We caught 2 S. magister
as well as a couple more S. occidentalis.
There is a difference of about 600 feet
elevation between these two sites (the
L.A. Co. site is lower). We returned to
UCR at 1635 after a trip of 119 miles.
In all, 3 Sceloporus magister, 1
Phrynosoma coronatum, and 7 Sceloporus
occidentalis were caught. Also seen in
the Joshua tree area were Callisaurus
draconoides, Crotaphytus wislizeni, &
Uta stansburiana.
April 18 Deep Canyon Desert Research Station, Riverside Co., Calif.
This morning at 0715 the field zoology
class left UCR for the station. We
drove over the Palms to Pinto Highway,
stopping occasionally to look at
