Feb. 18 Santa Rosa Mts., Riverside Co., Calif.
watering holes. There was some excellent
habitat for Uta meansi, but none
were seen today, even though the
weather was calm and clear. However,
some Uta stansburiana were seen
at 1215. No other reptiles were seen
all day. There is a beautiful stand
of native palms in a grove at the
upper end of Cat Canyon. The canyon
is little marked by the hand of man
yet, although a number of “jackrabbit
cabins” have been built around the
mouth of the canyon. Later we hiked
to an artificial pool in Cariizo
Creek drainage that has been developed
for bighorn. No reptiles were seen here
at all. I returned to UCR at 1845 after
a trip of 165 miles.
Feb. 20 Dale Dry Lake, San Bernardino Co., Calif.
This morning at 0730 Frank Aubry,
Charles Filippini & I left UCR for this
area. We reached the collection site
at 0945, a distance of 108 miles from UCR,
which I shall call Station IV for
our soil sampling work. The actual
soil sampling site is 600 feet N.E. of
the intersection of the 29 Palms - Rice
road (called Dale Road), the road through
Dale Dry Lake past the chemical plant,
and the road to the Iron Age Mine.
