Jan. 23
Colorado Desert, Riverside & Imperial C.S., Calif.
This afternoon at 1355 Lee Munro & I
left UCR, headed for the Algodona Dunes.
At 1505 we stopped to see Lloyd Tervis
at Rancho Mirage, and to collect some
sand at his place for J.W. Newell. We
left his place at 1610 and drove past
our campsite in the dunes at about
1845. We drove on through Glanis
to the Agilly - Palo Verde road. The 12
miles from Glanis to this road is
now well paved. It should be
terific for night collecting later
in the season, but we didn't see
any reptiles on it tonight. One kit
fox was seen, however. We had a good
look at it in the lights of the car.
We pulled into our campsite at 2000.
Jan. 24
Minimum temp. tonight - 41°F.
We arose at 0900. After breakfast we drove
to the top of the big dune where I took
some pictures. At 0930 we saw the first
lizards (Uma). We returned to our camp-
site and began looking for lizards at
1000. The first large Uma was seen at
1020. At 1030 we took our soil samples
at station II (depression between dunes).
At 1100 we took soil samples from
station I in the Yuma Dunes. This
station is at the top of a large
dune. A white stake was driver into the
sand to mark each station location.
