Feb. 2 Colorado Desert, Riverside & Imperial Cos., Calif.
proceeded S.W. toward a power line. The
road along the powerline goes right
past Lone Bunchan in Tule Arroyo.
This walking dune is 4 miles from highway
99 by the route just described. The
wind was blowing fairly hard while we
were there, making the sand cut like
a knife when it hit you. The area on
all sides of this dune are very arid.
Some beetles (6) were dug out of the
sand of the dune. These were placed
in bottle H to take back to Riverside
to see if Luma motata will eat them.
We feel luma must eat them to be
able to survive in this very desolate
location, and we know from other
investigators that luma are present on
this dune. We left the dune area at
sundown and drove south to go around
the southern end of the Salton Sea. I
wanted to locate the swamp Engine
Cardiff told me was east of Hland.
However, we were unable to find it in
the dark, so we drove north on
highway 111 to Mecca. Then we turned
east on highway 195 and camped just
east of the canal before the road enters
Box Canyon. We reached this spot at
2130, after driving 266 miles today. The
minimum temp. tonight is 43° F.
(Beetles are Eusettus productus-see journal to 5/26/59.)
