Jan. 30 Mojave Desert, San Bernardino Co., Calif.
time in the afternoon, no Ume scoparia were seen. We returned
to the road from Cadiz to Rice, and
followed it south until it joined
the paved road that runs from Rice
to Desert Center. We stopped at the
end of this dirt road (which had
been pretty bad, but passable) and
cooked supper as it was getting
dark. We then drove to Desert
Center, where we bought some white
gas at the Chevron station, then
proceeded to Riverside via Indio.
We reached UCR at 2140, after
driving 307 miles today, and 675 miles
on the entire trip.
Feb. 2 Colorado Desert, Riverside & Imperial Gs., Calif.
Frank Aubrey & I left UCR this
morning at 0815. We drove east on high-
way 60 to Garnet, then along the old
highway to Granddaddy Dune. Frank saw
a Ume from the car, but we could find no
trace of it when we reached the spot.
No tracks were evident, indicating these
animals still are not very active at this
location. We then drove to Lloyd Tevis'
place in Rancho Mirage & loaded some
sand for Jav Newell. Next we proceeded
to Palm Desert to see if plainspyles
had returned to Deep Canyon area.
