Dec. 11
Dale Dry Lake, San Bernardino Co., G.I.f.
Frank Aubrey & I left UCR at 2055
tonight and drove to our campsite near the
lake bed, arriving at 2315. The air was
clear and cold with no wind. The minimum
temp. tonight was 39°F. We drove 112 miles tonight.
Dec. 12
We arose at 0900. The temp. at that
time was 48°F. The sky contained a few
cirrus clouds. There was no wind. It
appears to have rained very recently since
the surface of the soil is still moist,
and there are pools of water occasionally
standing beside the road. Many of
the creosote bushes look in good condition
with lots of leaves. A large number of
annuals are through the ground, but
few of them are over one inch in
height. One has to step very carefully to
keep from stepping on newly sprouted
annuals, and in some locations one can't
walk without stepping on some. A
number of species appear to be present,
but I'm not good enough at identifying
newly sprouted plants to tell what more
than a couple are. Paloxia linearis &
Hesperocallis undulata, Oenothera deltoides, &
Hoffmanseggia densiflora (?) were the only ones
that Frank & I could identify. Paloxia &
Hoffmanseggia were the only ones we found
in bloom. Paloxia seems to be the most
numerous annual at this location.
