Mojave Desert, San Bernardino Co., Calif.
Callisaurus draconoides buried in the
sand (at 12:15) where we took sand
samples for moisture content. The
sand data are as follows: (code-K)
air temp. (waist high) - 15°C.
.. .. (1 cm) - 17°C.
sample 1 - soil surface - 27°C.
.. 2 - 3" deep - 11°C.
.. 3 - 6" .. - 8.6°C.
.. 4 - 9" .. - 8.9°C.
.. 5 - 12" .. - 9.4°C.
.. 6 - 18" .. - 10.9°C.
One Uta stansburiana was seen
running across the road at 13:25
as we were driving from the dunes
back to Kelbaker Road. We drove into
Amboy to refuel, then travelled east
on highway 66 to the road to Cady,
(12 miles east of Amboy). We drove through
Cady, and were about 4 miles north of
Chubbuck when we found a road leading
to the sand dunes on the eastern
shore of Cady Dry Lake. We drove on
this side road for 5 miles until we
reached the dunes. There were a couple
of pretty rough spots to cross, but
that 1958 Chev. station wagon (#240)
never missed a beat. The wind was
blowing rather hard at these dunes,
and as it was quite cool by this
