Mayhew 1959 Nov. 8 Lovejoy Butte area, Los Angeles Co., Calif. Frank Aubrey & I left UCR at 0835 and drove to Phelan. We reached the collecting area near Phelan at 0925. at this time there was no wind & no clouds. The air temp (30") was 17.5°C. No trace of lizards were found in this region that had yielded large numbers of lizards earlier in the year. We drove on to Lovejoy Buttes and Saddleback Buttes with the same success. Then we drove past Black Butte to El Mirage Dry Lake, past the Shadow Mountains to Hi Vista, then back to Saddleback Buttes. Although we saw a number of Joshua trees along the way, no lizards were seen on or near any of them. However, there were not enough Joshua trees seen on this side trip to warrant returning to those areas to look for Sceloporus register again. We retraced our steps back to Phelan, where we learned at the corner store that there had been one frost so far this year (-1.5°C.), but several nights had been down to the 30's and low 40's (F.). The maximum temp. today was 23°C (air temp -30°). The weather was very nice all day, so I feel sure that if lizards weren't out today, they won't be out any more
