Mayhew 1959 Journal 10. Jan.29 Mojave Desert, San Bernardino Co., Calif. drove through extensive stands of yucca (Yucca jaegeri). The road is unpaved from highway 91 to Cina, but is paved from Cina to Kelso. We returned to Kelso by way of Cina. We drove through Kelso and up to Kaiser's old Vulcan Mine. This is an iron mine that operated during the war (WWII),but has been closed since. It is 3800 feet in elevation in the Providence Mts. We reached the mine at 1730 and established camp inside the cement foundation for one of the former mine buildings. This mine is 9 1/2 mi. S.E. of Kelso, and has a paved road leading to it. The minimum temp. tonight was 34°F. We drove a total of 116 miles today. Jan.30 This morning we arose at 0730, ate a little breakfast, collected a couple of flowering plants, then broke camp at 0930. We drove into Kelso for a steak breakfast at the restaurant, then drove south on Kelbeke Road about 10 miles, where we found the road leading to the Kelso Dunes. We drove in just past the second corrugated and parked. Then we began looking for Uria scoparia. We found a couple, and I immature
