Mayhew 1959 Journal 100, Oct. 11 Lovejoy Buttes, Los Angeles Co., Calif. area about noon and drove to Lovejoy Buttes to look for Sceloporus magister. Again we were surprised to find that many of these animals are still active. In fact, they are apparently active throughout the day, once they warm up in the morning enough to get going. We found them still active at sunset. We caught 26 animals today, as follows: Uta stansburiana - 2 (1 ad m; 1 ad f) Sceloporus occidentalis - 10 (5 ad m; 5 ad f) Sceloporus magister - 14 (7 ad m; 6 ad f; 1 im f) We returned to UCR at 1905 after a trip of 169 miles. Oct. 20 Palm Springs, Riverside Co., Calif. I left UCR at 0830 this morning to make the monthly collection of Uta insignata. I drove down the old highway from Garnet to 1000 Palms + back to Garnet looking for animals, but I didn't see a single vertebrate of any kind. I reached the collecting area on Vista Chino in Palm Springs at 1005. I began looking for lizards at 1015, but had little luck finding any animals. I saw an adult Cnemidophorus tigris at 1020. At this time the air temp (30") was 32.0°C, air temp (1cm) was 35.0°C, soil surface temp. was 43.5°C, relative humidity was 13%, S.E. wind, 1-3 mph.
