Sept. 9
Glamis area, Imperial Co., Calif.
a distance of about 1 mile on
the pavement. We quit right collecting
at 2045. We had captured 26 animals
of 5 species today. We drove 262
miles today. The maximum temp.
today was 108°F., the minimum temp.
tonight was 81°F. The humidity
remained quite high because of the
thunderheads that surrounded us.
Sept. 10
We arose at 1220 because a
strong wind came up out of the S.W.,
producing a terrible dust and sand
storm at our campsite on the
highest dune in the area. We drove
east 14 miles to escape the sand,
then camped again. We got back
to bed at 0115. We arose again at
0615. There was no wind blowing
but the sky was partly overcast.
We gathered soil samples from 0700
to 0730. Then we began to look
for lizards at 0730 (we had seen
5 at 0710 near our soil sampling
area). We were able to capture a
fair number by 1040, when we
stopped looking. One lizard escaped
from R17, so we replaced it with
another animal at that time. We
cought a total of 30 lizards this
morning of 2 species:
