Jan. 29 Mojave Desert, San Bernardino Co., Calif.
75 residents of Kelso now, but it
used to have a population of about
700. Diesel engines have made the
difference, since the water tanks, etc.
aren't needed any longer. Seven of
the nine wells are capped now. All
nine can produce about 35 gallons
per minute each. There is a reservoir
at Kelso that can hold over 1 million
gallons, but it isn't used any longer.
The hotel and restaurant are open
24 hours a day to handle railroad
crews. The building, built in 1923, is
in much better condition than the
rest of the town. We left Kelso &
drove north on Kelbaker Road toward
Baker. About 22 miles N.W. of Kelso
we stopped to collect some flowers
of [illegible]. It was situated
at the end of a lava flow that
stopped at the edge of the road.
We also collected two other plants
in flower at this spot, which we
haven't been able to identify yet. In
addition, about a dozen [illegible]
were seen, several of which were collected.
After refueling at Baker, we drove
east on highway 91 for 25 miles until
we reached the road to Cima. We
turned right off the highway and
