Mayhew 1959 Journal 91. Sept. 9 1000 Palms area, Riverside Co., Calif. Frank Aubry + I left UCR at 0450 and drove to our soil sampling area near 1000 Palms. We collected soil samples from 0600 to 0610. Then we began to look for lizards 2 miles north of Palm Desert on Country Club Drive at 0705. We saw one lizard at 0710, but no more were seen at this location, even though we looked until 0815, even though the creosote bushes in this area look to be in excellent shape. We drove along the road for a while to see if we could find any animals. We saw a couple, but not enough to pay us to stay in the area. Therefore, we left this area at 0905 and drove to Palm Springs. We returned to our former collecting site on Vista Chino Road and began looking for lizards at 0955. In this area we saw 2 recently hatched Dipsoaunus dorsalis (one of which we toe-clipped #12 and released) + 1 Uma inornata. We stopped looking for animals at 1110 and prepared to drive to Glenrio. Animals caught to this time were: Uma inornata - 8 (5 ad ?; 3 ad ?) Urosaurus graciosa - 1(ad ?) Thus, only 9 animals were caught all morning. No wind today at all.
