Mayhew 1959 Journal 88. Aug. 25 Lovejoy Buttes area, Los Angeles Co., Calif. We collected between Lovejoy Buttes + Saddleback Butte all day long. Animals were not as numerous during the middle of the day, but some Sceloporus magister could be located throughout the day. The last Sceloporus magister was seen on a Joshua tree 15 minutes after sundown. At that time the air temp. (30") was 26.5°C. We quit looking for lizards at 1845, and camped for the night at 2000. We captured 22 lizards today, as follows: Sceloporus magister - 19 (6 ad σ; 3 ad ♀; 7 imm ♂; 3 imm ♀) Uta stansburiana - 2 (1 ad σ; 1 ad. ♀) Crotaphytus wislizeni - 1 (imm ♀) We drove 161 miles today. Maximum temp. today was 97°F., minimum temp. tonight was 62°F. We camped near Phelan. Aug. 26 Phelan area, San Bernardino Co., Calif. We arose at 0645, and started after lizards at 0800. We looked in this region until 1205, when we drove to Hesperia. We found the most lizards (Sceloporus occidentalis) at the eastern edge of Phelan. We arrived in the Hesperia area at 1230, but animals weren't much in evidence at this time of day. Therefore, we decided, at 1400, to drive to Wrightwood.
