We arose at 0615. Soil samples were
collected from 0800 to 0815 while the other
two (Frank & Dave) began looking for
lizards at 0800. We quit collecting in
the dunes at 1045, just after Frank
pulled a sidewinder out of its hole
with his bare hands. A lizard had
just run into the hole and its tail
still protruded from the entrance.
Frank grabbed through the sand from
above & came up with the sidewinder
-lizard in its mouth. The lizard had
been bitten by the snake and died
within a minute. Luckily neither fang
had hit Frank's hand, so he was
unharmed, but a bit shaken. The weather
was so pleasant today we found several
lizards resting on the pavement as
we drove toward the Coachella Canal. Therefore,
we collected all the way to the canal,
which we reached at 1200. We ate
lunch, then left the canal at 1300.
We stopped between the canal and
looked for animals from 1300 to 1430,
but found very few animals active at
this time. The following animals were
cought this morning & early afternoon:
Uma notata - 27 (10 ad ?, 2 ad ?; 7 im. ?; 8 im. ?)
Urosaurus graciosa - 4 (3 ad. ?; 1 ?)
Crotalus cerastes - 1 (ad ?)
