Leland Creek, 5 mi. N. of Strawberry, Tuolumne Co., Calif.
This morning at 0915 Milo Long & I
began looking for lizards. We found them
to be fairly abundant in the sunny areas
above the creek and on a rocky slope
nearby. We captured a total of 8
animals during the morning (3 Sceloporus
occidentalis & 5 Sceloporus graciosus).
We quit looking at 1240.
Aug. 18
5 mi. N.W. of 1000 Palms, Riverside Co., Calif.
This morning at 0455 Frank Aubrey,
David Reuther & I left UCR on our
monthly collecting trip to the Colorado &
Mojave Deserts. We reached station III
at 0615. Soil samples were obtained by
0645, then we began to look for lizards.
The first lizard (a young one) was seen
at 0650. It was Uma inornata. The sky
was somewhat overcast & a strong wind
was blowing, so animals didn't become
active very early. Then it cleared up
suddenly & became quite hot quickly.
Consequently, the animals were active
for a relatively short time this
morning. Since few animals were to
be seen here, we were afraid we might
be thinning out the population too
much. Therefore, at 0930 we went over
to Ramon Road to collect. However,
the area we used last year is so very
dry we didn't expect to see very much.
