Mayhew 1959 Jan. 28 Mojave Desert, San Bernardino Co., Calif. of Kelso. We drove into a large amphitheater-like area on the S.E. side of the mountains, looking for Cottonwood Springs. This was a very attractive area that is apparently used a good deal for cattle grazing. We didn't find Cottonwood Springs, but we saw a number of Uta stansburiana. However, we were unable to catch any of them. We were there from 1435 to 1525. We continued north, looking for a road into the Kelso Dunes. We missed the road Frank Vasek & I used last spring, so we drove on into Kelso, then turned left along the railroad tracks on a road that the map indicated would reach the dunes. However, 4 miles W. of Kelso the road became impassable any further, so we camped for the night at 1745. During the night, the minimum temp. was 28° F. We drove 252 miles today. Jan. 29 We arose at 0745, ate breakfast, + broke camp at 0945. We drove back to Kelso to see where the nearest gas station was located (it turned out to be Baker, 35 miles away). I talked for a few minutes with one of the employees in the Union Pacific depot, hotel, + restaurant. There are about at 1525 (waist high) air temp.-11.8° (1 cm) air -13.8° surface temp.-14.5° Journal 8.
