Mayhew 1959 Journal 81a Aug. 12 2 mi. S. of UCR, Riverside Co., Calif. (Notes obtained by Frank Aubrey). This morning Frank & Charles Filippini left UCR at 0530, reaching this site at 0540. No lizards were seen until 0635 (an immature Sceloporus orcutti), at which time weather conditions were: air temp (30") -22.0°C. soil surface temp -24.0°C. " " (1cm) -24.5°C. relative humidity -64% a total of 8 lizards (5 Sceloporus orcutti; 2 Sceloporus occidentalis + 1 Uta stansburiana) were captured between this time and 0905. When they left at 0915, weather conditions were: air temp (30") -25.0°C. soil surface temp.-31.5°C. " " (1cm)-25.0°C. rel. humidity - 50%. Box Springs Mts., Riverside Co., Calif. Between 0935 and 1100, a total of 7 lizards were taken today at this site (4 Sceloporus orcutti, 2 Sceloporus occidentalis, 1 Uta stansburiana). Only 1 Sceloporus occidentalis was seen on fence posts on Pigeon Pass Road. No species seemed as abundant as earlier in the summer. Whether this is due to weather or to our collecting in the area is hard to say. Perhaps we should try some of the side roads up to the base of the hills where rocks are very abundant. At 1115 a slight breeze started & the relative humidity dropped to 30%. Since they saw no more lizards after 1100, they returned to UCR at 1130. They drove 29 miles today.
