3 mi. E. of Dardenelles, Tuolumne Co., Calif.
in the sun on a fallen log beside
the road. The log was one of several
that occurred in an open meadow
near Eureka Campground. It is also
near Douglas Lodge. In looking
around, Milo Long, Bobby Mayhew & I
found an additional 6 lizards. We were
able to catch a total of 5 of them.
Four of them were Sceloporus gracilis,
one was a Sceloporus occidentalis.
The last one was captured at 1740,
just a short time before the sun
disappeared from this area. All but
one of them was on a log when
first seen. That one was sitting
in the sun on a small rock. No
other lizards were seen during the
entire trip this afternoon.
This morning, however, about a dozen
lizards were seen while I walked in
the vicinity of Cow Creek. The first
one was seen at 0912, sitting in the
sun on a low rock. Most of the
rest of them were extremely "spooky"-
I rarely got within 30 ft. of them
before they disappeared into holes. I
returned to the cabin at 1230 with
a total of 1 Sceloporus occidentalis
and 2 Sceloporus gracilis. Lizards don't
appear to be nearly as abundant here as
at similar elevations in the San Bernardino Mts.
