The first Sceloporus occidentalis was
seen at 0650, also sitting in the
sun on the trunk of a Joshua tree.
We saw about 8 Sceloporus magister and
2 Sceloporus occidentalis before we were
able to capture any lizards. Three newly
hatched Uta stansburiana were seen in
this region during the day. Sceloporus
occidentalis were so numerous along
the road 1 to 3 miles east of Phelan
that it took us 3 hours to drive the
2 miles. We continued east of Phelan
to Hesperia, then S.E. to the crossing
over the Mojave River. We spent from
1330 to 1430 resting in the car by the
bridge. Then we retraced our route
looking for lizards again. We returned
to Phelan, then drove N.W. from that
village. Sundown occurred at 1850, so
we stopped looking for lizards at
1900 and returned to UCR. We reached
the campus at 2015, after a 172 mile trip.
The animals caught today were as follows:
Sceloporus magister - 8 (3 ad ?, 2 ad ?, 2 im ?, 1 im ?)
Sceloporus occidentalis - 21 (9 ad ?, 11 ad ?, 1 im ?)
Callisaurus draconoides - 1 (ad ?) Total = 30
