Jan. 25
Colorado Desert, Riverside Co., Calif.
The first Uma insomata we saw
was at 1330. At this time, the air
temp. was 24°C., soil surface temp.
was 30.5°C. We saw only one other
one (both immature) before we left the
area at 1400. We returned to UCR,
arriving there at 1517, after travelling
total of 482 miles.
Jan. 28
Mojave Desert, San Bernardino Co., Calif.
This morning at 0730, Frank Aubrey,
Mark Kohn, Fritz Zaunst & I left
UCR. We drove to the Phelan area to
look for prospective Sceloporus
magister sites. An area just off
highway 138, 2 mi. S.W. of Phelan looked
good, but is on some rather steep
ground. Beekly Road, just west of
this spot, however, looked even
better. There is also an excellent
stand of Larrea divaricata north
of the Joshua tree area on the
same road. After surveying this
area sufficiently, we drove north
until we reached the Palmdale Road.
We turned right on it and drove
to the new freeway near Victorville.
We drove on it to Barstow, then on
highway 66 to the Kelbaker Road, 5 mi. E.
of Amboy. We drove north off this road
to the granite hts., about 20 miles S.
