Lovejoy Buttes, Los Angeles Co., Calif.
today than we have seen on all our
collecting trips combined this past
year. In addition, we caught more
of them today (24) than we presently
have in our entire collection for
reproduction studies on this species.
Apparently, in the past we have been
working at the very edge of the
distribution of S. magister in this
region. Now we have moved farther
out into the occupied area. No
Sceloporus occidentalis were seen
today until we returned to our old
collecting areas late this afternoon.
Apparently these two species overlap
in distribution in a rather narrow
band in this region. We captured a
total of 25 animals today, divided as
follows:
Sceloporus magister - 24 (5ad σ, 5ad. ♀, 4 imm. α, 5 imm. ♀, 5 ?)
Sceloporus occidentalis - 1 (ad. ♀)
In addition to collecting in the immediate
vicinity of Lovejoy Buttes, we captured
animals on or near Saddleback Buttes
(18 miles east of Landcaster). A road
goes between Pinto & Rocky Buttes, and
spirits Alpine Buttes, but no specimens
were seen or collected near these outcrops.
We returned toward UCR at 1915, reaching
there at 2025, after a trip of 224 miles.
(Sunset was at 1901).
