June 23 Mojave Desert, San Bernardino Co., Calif.
This morning at 0700 Frank Aubrey,
David Reuther & I left UCR for the
Phelan area. We reached the collecting
area at 0800 and immediately began
to capture Sceloporus occidentalis. As
usual, Sceloporus magister were very
hard to locate. We have found that
we see more lizards in this area by
driving along the dirt & paved roads
than by walking. Therefore, we drove
over many of the roads in this
area between 0815 and 1400 when we
stopped looking for animals. By that
time the wind was blowing so hard
we couldn't control our nooses. We
found Sceloporus occidentalis from 0800
to 1040, and again from 1310 to 1400.
Sceloporus magister, on the other hand,
was seen from 0900 to 1215 and that was
all. There was no second activity period
while we were still there. A total of 28
animals were caught today, as follows:
Sceloporus occidentalis - 21 (14 ad. M, 5 ad. F, 2 ad (?) ?)
Sceloporus magister - 6 (1 ad. O, 2 ad. F, 2 ad (?) ?, 1 ad (?) ?)
Crotaphytus wyaligani - 1 (ad. O)
We reached UCR at 1510 after a trip of
133 miles today.
