Mayhew 1959 June 19 Journal 67. Coachella Valley, Riverside Co., Calif. water is still flowing into some of the pools. Lloyd took several pictures of the waterholes and congregated frogs. at 1300 we saw 1 yearling bighorn and 1 adult (sex?) deeper in the canyon. They were at the area of the canyon were the water on the surface ended. There may have been more pools further upstream, but this was the end of the continuous pools of water. We turned around and retraced our steps, beginning at 1315. The highest temp. we (air) recorded in the canyon today was 41°C. (106° F.). There was a slight breeze blowing up the canyon all the time we were in it. We reached the mouth of the canyon at 1440. The following animals were seen in the canyon today: Black-throated sparrow (6-10) Mourning dove (4) House finch (3 ad., 1 young) White-throated swifts (5) Gambel quail (6-8) Ladder-backed woodpeckls Scott oriole (1♀) Uta meanae (2) Cnemidophorus tigris (1) Verdin (1) Hyla auricolor (many) Ovis canadensis (8-9) I returned over the old highway and caught one more Phrynosoma platyrhino on the pavement. A few Callisaurus draconoides were seen on both trips over this road, but none were caught. I reached UCR at 1825 after a trip of 134 miles.
