1000 Palms area, Riverside Co., Calif.
Dune; collected our soil samples, then
began looking for lizards. There were a
large number of snake tracks over the
sand. They appeared to have been made
by relatively small snakes. I haven't
seen so many snake tracks at one
time before. We collected reptiles from
0630 to 1010 when it appeared all the
lizards on the dunes were through being
active for the day. For example, at 0925
the water in one of our canteens was
42.2°C. (108°F.), and by 1000 it was 44.5°C.
(112°F.). The air temp. (30°) when we stopped
at 1010 was 40.8°C. (105°F.). As we headed
for home (near the power line road inter-
section with the old highway) we saw a
total of 6 Dipsosaurus dorsalis cross
or come to a stop on the pavement.
We stopped and captured 5 before they
all disappeared. Including these animals
and the 1 we caught last night, we
captured the following in this area:
Dipsosaurus dorsalis - 7 (sexes not determined)
Colonyx variegatus - 1 (ad. ♀)
Phrynosoma platyhinus - 1 (ad. ♂)
Urosaurus graciosa - 1 (ad. ♂)
Uma inornata - 24 (3 ad. ♂, 11 ad. ♀, 5 imm. ♂, 5 imm. ♀)
This gave us a total of 34 caught in
this area, and 113 for the entire trip, making
this one of the most successful
