May 22 Algodones Dune area, Imperial Co., Calif.
We began night collecting at 1900.
a total of 17 Colonyx variagatus (10 ♂ and
7 ♀) were captured between then and 2320,
although we drove to the end of the
pavement east of Slanios and back to
the canal nearest Brawley on the Slanios
Road, all but one of the animals were
captured in the creosote bush scrub
habitat between the two canals (the
other animal was captured in the dune
area near our Urea collecting site).
They were still active when we quit
for the night. Each time we drove
between the 2 canals (a total of 6 times)
we found additional animals. Two Crostalus
cerastes were seen on the road (1 had just
been run over, the other was alive), but
no other reptiles were seen after dark.
We drove a distance of 250 miles today,
84 miles of which were for night collecting.
The minimum temp. tonight was 60° F.
May 23 We arose at 0730 and ate breakfast. I
gathered soil samples from 0830 to 0915
while Bert looked for lizards. They were
already active when we walked into the
field at 0820. We looked for lizards
until 1200, when we had to return to
the car for more sacks (I was carrying
1 Urea and 2 Ursoaurus in my hands because
I had no place to put them). After we
