Mayhew 1959 Journal S. Jan. 25 Colorado Desert, Riverside Co., Calif. about 70 feet from the old highway on the south-west side. A string of rocks at the cairn point directly at the sampling site. The results were: Station III. Depth Temp (°C.) H2O content % by wt. Sample 1- surface 19.4 " 2- 3" 11.4 " 3- 6" 11.1 " 4- 9" 11.0 " 5- 12" 13.2 " 6- 18" 14.8 Some rain fell in this area on Jan. 6 (0.37" at Rancho Mirage), and this moisture was quite evident in the soil sample. The surface was quite dry, but from 3" down to 10"-11" the soil was really moist. At 12" depth, however, no moisture was evident. There was a sharp boundary between wet & dry sand at that depth. Down to 18" there was no indication of moist sand. This sampling station is about ½ way from the bottom to the top of the growth of Larrea divaricata. The altitude at Granddaddy Dune was 560'. At this time the relative humidity was 35%, and no wind was blowing. We finished the soil sampling at 0930,
