May 16 Mojave Desert, San Bernardino Co., Calif.
on our way to the San Bernardino
Mts., we saw a pair of Gambel
Quail with 6 chicks. They were able to
fly a short distance, even though they
seemed quite small.
We drove up Cushionberry Grade, past
Baldwin Lake, through Big Bear City, &
turned left on the road to Morridge.
We continued on this road until the
pavement ended, then turned right on
Balsam Blvd. This road (dirt) took
us down into the Santa Ana River
canyon, through 7 Oaks, to Barton
Flats. We reached South Fork camp-
ground at 1850, and set up camp, as
well as set out the mammal traps.
Animals that had been seen along
the road between Stoddard Valley &
Barton Flats were:
Gambel quail
House sparrow
Violet-green swallow
Oregon junco
Stella's jay
Robin
Sciurus griseus
Cliff swallow
Western wood pewee
Shrike
Kingbird
Citellus (Merriam)
Sceloporus magister
I forgot to bring the max.-min. thermometer
along, so we don't know how cold it
was tonight. However, at 2205, it
was 8°C.
