May 16 Mojave Desert, San Bernardino Co., Calif.
after 1200. By 1400 we had captured
6 Cryptophytus collaris and 9 Sauromalus
obesus, some in small rock piles
within 50 yards of our campsite.
Apparently the weather was so
cool this morning that they hadn't
emerged when we were scouring the
rocky hillsides for them. In addition
to these two species, we also collected
at this site; for a total of 27 animals:
Cnemidophorus tigris - 3
Uta stansburiana - 8
Callisaurus draconoides -1
After lunch (late) we drove back
to the bench mark near which we
had released 7 adult Cophosoma
agassizi the afternoon before. Two
of these animals (#12 and #14) were
found about 50 feet south-east of
the release point. None of the others
were found, even though we walked
about 1/4 mile in a south-easterly
direction. We stopped looking at 1440.
Other animals seen at this location wu:
Black-throated sparrow
Rock wren Masticophis flagellum
Cotillus leucurus
Scott oriole
Yellow warbler
