Mayhew
1947
April 19
Wildcat Canyon, Contra Costa Co., Calif.
At 9:55 A.M. one or was seen sitting near the
top of a willow tree. He was very inactive, and sang
only very occasionally. His song was rather discordant.
It sounded some like a worn-out mockingbird.
His black head, reddish breast, black wings with the
white "windows" showed up very plainly.
May 3
Strawberry Canyon, U.C. campus, Alameda Co., Calif.
A ? was seen about 8' above the ground in
a bush. It then flew down to the ground &
picked up some edible substance, then flew to
the top rail of a wooden fence. It sat
rather still, moving its head from side to
side occasionally, uttering a single note as
it did so.
