Black-headed Grosbeak Mayhew 1947 April 19 Wildcat Canyon, Contra Costa Co., Calif. At 9:55 A.M. one or was seen sitting near the top of a willow tree. He was very inactive, and sang only very occasionally. His song was rather discordant. It sounded some like a worn-out mockingbird. His black head, reddish breast, black wings with the white "windows" showed up very plainly. May 3 Strawberry Canyon, U.C. campus, Alameda Co., Calif. A ? was seen about 8' above the ground in a bush. It then flew down to the ground & picked up some edible substance, then flew to the top rail of a wooden fence. It sat rather still, moving its head from side to side occasionally, uttering a single note as it did so.
