Mayhew 1947 Mar. 15 Western Grebe Lake Merritt, Oakland, Alameda Co., Calif. At 10:15 A.M. one individual was seen very close to shore. He dove forward and went under water, returning to the surface 25 seconds later about 10 feet from when it went under. At 10:19 A.M. he dove again, coming up about 30' away 25 seconds later. At 10:35 A.M. one individual of this species was seen resting on the water. He had his neck pulled back swan-style, with the bill resting on the front of the neck. The head remained facing forward.
