Florida Gallinule
Conaway Ranch, 2 miles east of Woodland, Yolo Co., Calif.
One adult + 2 young were seen swimming
on a small pond in the middle of a
barley field about 11 A.M. As soon as I
was spotted, they swam to the bank. I
circled the pond & approached the edge
at the spot where they had hidden. The
adult flew out with a single, harsh
note, but the young had submerged near
the bank. After standing motionless for
about one minute, they both came to the
surface about 3 feet from shore, uttering
several notes as they did. I tried to
catch them with my hands, but by the
time I reached the spot where they
arrived at the shore, they were so well
hidden that I was unable to find them
again.

On my return to the pond today I
saw both of the adults, but only one
youngster seemed to be around. I saw no
sign of the remains of the other one.
