(cont.) herb slightly hirsute; leaves much divided; found on an east-facing slope; altitude 1100 feet; growing with Sidalcea, Solanum, Brodiaea capitata, Rhus diversiloba, Baccharis, several species of Graminae; soil rocky with little top soil. 21. Brodiaea capitata Benth. (Blue Dick) Herb growing solitary, one flower head to a plant; grows from a bulb; corolla deep blue; leaves grass-like; found on an east-facing slope; altitude 1100 feet; growing with Rhus diversiloba, Sidalcea malvaeflora, Solanum umbelliferum, Baccharis, & several species of Graminae; little top soil; grow from 6 to 15 inches high. 22. Sidalcea malvaeflora Gray (Checker Bloom) Herb from 8 to 24 inches high; several flowers in each cluster; corolla pink to purplish; two types of flowers — perfect and pistillate — perfect flowers larger; herbage hairy; found on east-facing slope, growing with Brodiaea capitata, Solanum umbelliferum, Rhus diversiloba, Baccharis, & several species of Graminae; altitude 1100 feet. 23. Solanum umbelliferum Esch. (Blue Witch) Woody-stemmed herb found growing in the shade of Quercus agrifolia, with Brodiaea capitata, Rhus diversiloba, Baccharis, Sidalcea malvaeflora, & several species of Graminae near by; corolla blue, stamens sessile around style, bright yellow; grows to about 24 inches high, altitude 1100 feet; soil rather rocky; blossoms nearly hidden by grass.
