Plant Catalogue Mayhew 1948 May 6 1715 Spruce St. Berkeley, Alameda Co., Calif. 1. Plantago lanceolata L. (English Plantain) Herb about 22" high; branched from base; leaves with long, slender petioles; herbage clammy; spikes only partially in flower; stems and leaf petioles purple at base. Altitude about 100 ft., found growing beside sidewalk with several species of Graminae. May 7 9 mi. south Modesto, Stanislaus Co., Calif. 2. Eschscholtzia californica Cham. (Calif. Poppy) Herbs about 12" high; branched from base; leaves much divided; flowers golden-yellow-orange; close in late afternoon; herbage clammy. Altitude 100 ft.; found growing at the edge of a garden; all near-by plants were of this species. 3. Euphorbia peplis L. (Petty Spurge) Herb about 8" high; herbage glabrous; most of the leaves alternate; flowers small, no corolla. Altitude 100 ft.; found growing beneath poplar tree. May 8 9 mi. south Modesto, Stanislaus Co., Calif. 4. Polygonum aviculare L. (Wire Grass) Herb about 10" high; foliage glabrous; small flowers in axiles of leaves; wide spread over the ground. Altitude 100 ft.; found growing on hard-packed ground near driveway. 5. Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. (Bermuda Grass) Grass usually not over 8" high; grows in close-packed groups; sprouts from nodes. Altitude 100 ft.; found growing at edge of lawn.
