Mayhew
1947
Spotted Towhee
2,
May 7
U.C. campus, Alameda Co., Calif.
Their eyes were still closed + they couldn't
seem to be able to pick their heads up
as yet. There was a narrow row of black
fuzz down the middle of the backs
of their bodies. There were also two
brown, unhatched eggs in the nest.
The rest of the vegetation right
around the nest ranged from one to
five feet in height; the average being
about 18 inches.

The parents weren't around at at
4:10 P.M. when I arrived at the nest
site. There were still only two young,
but they were covered with black
down all over. Their eyes were open
+ they moved around within the
nest occasionally.
