Brown Towhee
1.
Mayhew
1947
Mar, 1
Strawberry Canyon, U.C. campus, Alameda Co., Calif,
at 8:40 several of this species were seen to be
feeding in company with a flock of Oregon
Juncos. The individual Towhees tolerated the
Juncos & fed much closer to them
than they did other members of their own
species. In feeding, they tended to work uphill.
They hop about when feeding. After a short time,
most of the individuals flew to the tops of
the bushes nearby, and remained quiet for some
minutes. Occasionally, what were presumed to
be mating pairs were seen to be feeding
quite close together.
June 7
At 8:25 A.M., a single individual was seen
sitting on a branch of a madrone just
behind Bowles Hall. It was about 20 feet
above the ground on the north-east side
of the tree. It uttered a single note
that sounded like a taip. The note was
uttered on the same pitch each time,
but it was uttered irregularly.
