Cliff Swallow
4.
April 1
Poleline Bridge, 3 mi. N.E. of Davis, Yolo Co., Calif.
Tonight I tried a new net to catch
the swallows as they left the nest, but
it was of no value to me. I finished by
using my old net. A ? English Sparrow
was roosting in nest 3-30. I couldn't see
if there was a nest started by English
Sparrows inside of it or not. One of the
pair of swallows in 3-29 escaped me, the
other was caught but was injured so
badly I had to kill it. The net swung
against the bridge support after the bird
was caught. One return was recorded
out of the 8 birds I caught. 44-54394
was taken from nest 4-2. The ones that were
banded were taken as follows:
49-25533 - 3-48 or 47
49-25534 - 3-4
49-25535 - 4-4
49-25536 - 4-9
49-25537 - 4-2
49-25538 - 3-57

At 8 A.M. I passed this bridge and found
most of the birds either adding mud to
repair old nests or building new ones.
Most of the new ones seem to be in
section 2. When I passed again at 3:15 P.M.
the birds were all feeding high in the
air around the bridge.

This afternoon I numbered all the new
nests that have been put up this year.
